Before and After School Care
The Day Care Center provides a safe haven while mothers work. This is a wonderful blessing and provides another option for women who were previously forced to abandon their children because they do not have an extended family or friends capable to help and provide care.
Big Day Care
Big Day Care kids, who are aged 2.5yrs-3.5yrs, will greet you at the gate with huge smiles and cheerful "yellow’s" (hello, hello!). All 20 children love to sing, play and dance. Little Natty, our 4 year old special needs boy with autism attends this centre too, with his own special needs carer, Tenaye.
Natty has made so much progress in the 2 months since he started in Day Care. Previously he had been living in the country north of Bahir Dar near Gondar. He was unable to communicate with words at all and never slept more than a couple of hours at a time at night. Now, he has begun to learn new words, can communicate his needs and sleeps through the night most of the time.
Netsanet is our supervisor here and is doing a great job with the children and her staff they are a wonderful caring group of ladies.
After School Care
After School Care incorporates Preschool and Outside School Hours Care, is by far the largest of our centres with 60+ children currently attending. Preschoolers attend a full day and the school children up to half a day. They attend different schools in the area around Grace and come to ASC before they start or after school. Some of the children attending ASC are enrolled in the local public school, meaning they are not in an environment that is conducive to learning. At ASC they have the opportunity to really learn and thus make the most of being educated.
Each day the children are monitored whilst doing their homework to ensure that they are able to grasp the concepts that have been taught to them that day (most of our KG and grade 1 student s are more educated than their mothers so can not turn to them for help with homework). They are given extra tutoring and lessons, as well as being given English classes and other extra curricular activities to broaden their education and their understanding of the world around them.
Banchayehu, the Supervisor and Head Tutor, and her staff do an amazing job of teaching and guiding these children to become the best that they can be.
